Google Pulls Wear OS After Reports of Soft-Bricking in Pixel Watches 1 and 2

Google halting Wear OS 5 rollout in Pixel Watches

Google Wear OS 5 was announced back in May at Google I/O; however, due to the recent soft-brick reports in Pixel Watch 1 and 2, Google has seemingly halted its rollout.

After the OS was made available on the Galaxy Watch 7 and the Watch Ultra, it was brought to the Google Pixel Watch 3 upon its release. It eventually made its way to the Pixel Watch 2 and 3 earlier this week.

Pixel Watch owners were recently allowed to install the OS into their devices. Although most of the users installed it successfully and didn’t face any issues, some Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 users met with a black screen that had a small Bluetooth logo at the bottom.

Following that, more and more users started reporting soft bricking events in watches due to the updates. Although it wasn’t a widespread issue, there were enough complaints to warrant an official investigation.

Luckily, the affected users were able to boot their bricked Pixel Watch in fast boot mode to reset and re-pair.

We currently don’t know the cause behind this error; however, Google is likely aware that the update is affecting more and more users, as it seems to have halted the rollout of the Wear OS 5 update for the first-gen Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2.

Following this move, the users who did not upgrade to Wear OS 5 during its initial availability won’t be able to update the OS. If you wish to access the Wear OS 5 on your device, you can do so via the manual route via factory images. But make sure to proceed with caution.

The tech giant has yet to address the bug officially. It’s still unknown when the rollout will resume, but for more updates, stay tuned!
