At Samsung Unpacked in July 2024, the company announced the release of projects such as the Galaxy Fol6 and Flip6, the Galaxy Watch Ultra, the Galaxy Ring, and more.
Although there was no mention of the XR headsets, there were subtle hints at the end of the conference to remind the audience that the anticipated XR platform is still in progress.
In early 2023, Google, Qualcomm, and Samsung announced their collaboration on an ‘XR Headset’ based on Android. There was speculation that the product would be released in late 2023 or early 2024. But, after the Apple Vision Pro headset release, there were little to no mentions of the headset.
The analyst has suggested that this wait shows a desire for Samsung to unveil a product that surpasses Apple’s Vision Pro headset features and functionalities.
However, at the Unpacked event, Rick Osterloh, SVP of Platforms and Devices at Google, took the stage and announced that they have been working on a collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm.
Osterloh said, “Looking forward, we’re collaborating to bring next-generation experiences across Galaxy products, from smartphones and wearables to even future technologies like the upcoming XR platform we’ve been working closely to develop in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm.”
Later, the president of Samsung’s Mobile Division, TM Roh, went on the stage and mentioned that “a new XR platform is coming later this year.”
Samsung has suggested that the wait won’t be too long, but it’s ambiguous when the launch will happen.
