On Thursday, OpenAI announced its anticipated entry into the search market with a prototype of its search engine, SerachGPT, to provide users with real-time and accurate answers and relevant sources.
OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood revealed that the service utilizes the PT-4 family of models and will only be accessible to 10,000 test users after its launch. She also disclosed plans to integrate the search engine, which is currently being tested, into its ChatGPT chatbot.
SearchGPT will become a threat to Google, which has been dominating the search market for ages but has lost pace since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022. It might also pose a threat to Microsoft’s Bing AI.
With the new model, users will be able to ask questions in normal language and get accurate and updated answers. It will also provide a sidebar with additional links to the relevant information. Additionally, users can also ask a follow-up question.
The company said in a blog post, “Getting answers on the web can take a lot of effort, often requiring multiple attempts to get relevant results. We believe that by enhancing the conversational capabilities of our models with real-time information from the web, finding what you’re looking for can be faster and easier.”
This prototype, along with OpenAI’s new mini-AI model, shows the company’s desire to be at the forefront of “multimodality” and offer a wide range of AI-generated media types.
However, according to reports, OpenAI’s costs are adding up, and since the SearchGPT is free after the launch, the company will have to figure out monetization methods eventually.
