A recent Microsoft Outlook bug has been causing desktop app crashes, high system resource usage, and blocking users from accessing their accounts on the web app, though it has been fixed now.
Initially, the company said the ongoing issues would only affect European customers, but recently, users worldwide are reporting the same problems with sign-in and app stability.
The company said, “We’re investigating an issue in which users in Europe may be experiencing crashing, not receiving emails or observing high memory usage when using the Outlook client.”
Microsoft also added, “We’re analyzing data from customers experiencing crashes and high memory usage when using the New Outlook desktop app. We’re reviewing service telemetry and reproducing the issue internally to develop a mitigation plan.”
There have also been some reports saying that the bug is also affecting Outlook on the Web (OWA), where the app is freezing and not loading for US users and others.
Customers who have been affected are seeing a notification alert telling them to restart the system because of high memory consumption.
The company revealed in an incident report that the bug may block users from logging into other Microsoft 365 services. In response, the company said, “We’re analyzing service telemetry, specifically networking data and authentication specific to the Netherlands, and further investigating potential impact to other Microsoft 365 services.”
Microsoft also tweeted that they found a potential memory management issue that may be responsible for this outage
The company has now fixed the bug and has asked users to refresh or restart their Outlook sessions.
Microsoft 365 Status wrote on X, “We’ve applied a config change and telemetry confirmed we’ve mitigated the impact. Users should refresh/restart their Outlook sessions. For more information, see MO907654 within the admin center. “
