On Wednesday, at the Meta Connect Conference 2024, the company unveiled updates on the virtual reality headset and the Ray-Ban smart glasses, demonstrating its AI prowess and the new generation of computing platforms.
He also revealed Orion, the prototype for holographic AR glasses, calling it “the most advanced glasses the world has ever seen.” The AR glasses have no bulky headset or wires and weigh less than 100 grams (3.5 ounces).
Orion has a “wrist-based neural interface,” meaning it lets you send signals from your brain to the device using a wristband that translates nerve signals into digital commands.
Zuckerberg called it “a glimpse of the future”; there is no release date for Orion yet.
Zuckerberg said Meta is working to “bring the future to everyone” with its headsets, glasses, and AI system. With a new update in its Llama model, people can now interact with Meta AI by speaking, with voices from known celebrities such as John Cena, Judi Dench, and Awkwafina.
It also revealed some AI updates, including one that lets influencers craft AI versions of themselves to interact with fans. The keynote stage showed an AI version of creator Don Allen Stevenson III appearing on the screen to answer a few questions.
Another AI update was a live translation, which was demonstrated by Zuckerberg wearing the smart glasses.
Meta revealed Meta Quest 3S, a cheaper version of the VR goggles, Quest 3, that was released last year — which will cost $299. It will start shipping on Oct. 15.
While the VR glasses were making headlines, the AR Ray Bans became a bigger hit thanks to the AI capabilities that let an AI assistant “see what you see, hear what you hear.”
