Figure Debuts New AI-driven Humanoid Robot F.02 to Challenge Tesla

| Updated on August 14, 2024

California-based robotics startup Figure has recently announced its second-generation humanoid robot, F.02, which is to be used in commercial settings and may even reach homes soon.

The new model has significant upgrades, including enhanced AI systems, improved computer vision with six AI-powered RGB cameras, a redesigned battery pack, electronic sensors, and actuators.

The recent updates also bring a new inference system that processes information three times faster than the previous model and has 50% more runtime compared to its latest generation, with AI-powered learning and self-correction.

The highlights of the update are the onboard microphones and speakers that allow for one-to-one interaction with humans. These robots are powered by AI custom models and trained in collaboration with AI.

However, the interactions will be similar to those of ChatGPT.

The company has also added a vision language model that will allow the humanoid to decipher what is happening through the camera lenses and decide whether there’s something to be done.

However, many reports have found that the Figure 02 demo video is similar to Tesla’s Optimus Gen-2 showcase from December 2023. Both videos showed improved agility and movement.

After the reveal of the F.02, Figure AI founder Brett Adcock took to his tweet, responding to an earlier “Bring it on” post from Tesla CEO Elon Musk on X with a “Look at me, I’m the captain now” meme from the film Captain Phillips. Although Elon Musk later deleted his tweet, Brett’s response remains.

Adcock believes that the robotics industry will have a positive outcome in the future and says, “These robots can eliminate the need for unsafe and undesirable jobs—ultimately allowing us to live happier, more purposeful lives.”
