Cash app users can claim up to $2,500 each as part of a $15 million class-action settlement for two data and security breaches, which included unauthorized account access and fraudulent transactions at the mobile payment service.
In a filing, Cash App explained that the first breach occurred due to a former employee who accidentally published 8.2 million Cash App customers’ sensitive personal information online.
In a filing, Cash App said, “We determined that a former employee downloaded certain reports of our subsidiary Cash App Investing in December 2021 that contained some US customer information without permission after the former employee’s employment ended.”
Later in 2023, another data breach occurred where some customers’ accounts had been accessed and there were some unauthorized transactions.
Complaints have alleged that Cash App and its parent company Block have “negligent security features, protocol, systems, screening, and design” and failed to install controls to block unauthorized users.
Users whose accounts were accessed without authorization or who had any fraudulent withdrawals and transfers can file claims, with conditions applied that they had or currently have an account on Cash App between August 23, 2018, and August 20, 2024.
Remember, to get the settlement money, you must have documentation to back up your claim.
Users can file a claim for three hours of lost time at a rate of $25 per hour. You can also file a claim to get reimbursement for transaction losses if you have the required documents to back it up.
