Thatcher’s Techbase, a Doom 2 mod that lets players descend into the tenth circle of hell to defeat Margaret Thatcher, “one of humanity’s greatest threats,” has been banned in Bethesda’s new in-game mod browser after being reported for real-world politics.
Launched in 2012, Thatcher’s Techbase was a widely loved Doom mod. With the latest ports of the first two Doom games, the creator was able to share it on the official mod page, allowing users to enjoy sending Margaret Thatcher to the deepest pits of Hell while allowing the PlayStation, and Xbox owners the opportunity to play the WAD for the first time.
However, unfortunately, the four-map Thatcher’s Techbase, including a soundtrack by composer Barry “Epoch” Topping and voice work from Hades’ Laila Berzins, has been banned after a user reported the mod to Bethesda.
Purvis shared a takedown notice on social media, saying it had “been reported for real-world politics and had been removed.”
The message from Bethesda said, “As a result, this account is receiving an educational notice. While this action was not taken as a violation of our Terms of Service or Code of Conduct, we encourage you to educate yourself on the modding guidelines and community rules.”
Although Thatcher’s Techbase will remain available to all PC players through non-Bethesda channels, the console players will be missing out on it. However, the players will be able to take some solace in the fact that they can access a decent version of Doom.
However, it seems that as of September 2, an alternate version of Thatcher’s Techbase has been uploaded to the official Doom mod catalog for the PC version of Doom 1 and Doom 2 by user ‘letskissbro’—Jim Purvis, the creator of Thatcher’s Techbase, using the X handle ‘letshugbro.
